Map of the District of Maine / Osgood Carleton 1799

Detail: Ship Engraving

The engraving of a ship was an appropriate choice for this map. Ships connected Maine's rivers and coast to the ports of the Atlantic basin, including Boston and England. Ships were essential to Maine's early economy; besides transporting people and goods to and from the region, the shipbuilding industry demanded a huge supply of lumber, one of Maine's chief exports then and today.
